Michael is a singer/songwriter whose off beat ballads tell
stories that don't typically get set to music. His
repertoire includes original folk ballads, topical songs, and
the inescapable songs of love found, lost and mangled.
His compositions range from a
rocking homage to Sesame Street, to a traditional ballad about
Jake's own ancestors who fled poverty in Ireland only to lose
everything to the Civil War.
Jake Michael has been composing
for 20 years, and won the Folk Factory People's Choice Award
in 1996. In July 1997, he was selected by Tom Gala of
the Bothy Club to record a live CD at the Mermaid Inn. In May
1998, Jake released his independently produced CD, Jake
Michael: Live at the Mermaid Inn. His song
"I'm Afraid of Everything" was selected to be on the
Oasis acoustic CD sampler #31, released in December 2001.
Jake also sings and plays banjo
and dulcimer with the folk fusion band King Platypus whose web
page is at www.jimbobsjournal.com.
Their CD "Transcendental Vaudeville" was released in
February 2001, and has been played on WXPN's Speely Hollow.
Jake and King Platypus play about 20 gigs a year, and have a
two hour Christmas set.
